Frequently asked questions

Which measurements can I convert?

Choose from 175 units across 18 categories: length, mass, area, volume and cooking measures, temperature, temperature differences, speed, time, data storage, data transfer rates, pressure, energy, power, angles, frequency, force, fuel economy, and torque.

Are US and Imperial units the same?

No. For example, a US liquid gallon is 3.785411784 liters, while an Imperial gallon is 4.54609 liters. Cups, pints, fluid ounces, fuel economy, and tons are labelled by their definition. Cooking measures also distinguish US, metric, and Australian conventions.

What is the difference between GB and GiB, or bits and bytes?

One byte is eight bits. A gigabyte (GB) is 1,000,000,000 bytes; a gibibyte (GiB) is 1,073,741,824 bytes. Decimal prefixes use powers of 1000 and binary prefixes use powers of 1024. Data transfer rates list bits and bytes separately.

Why are temperature and temperature difference separate?

A temperature value needs a scale offset: 0 °C is 32 °F. A temperature difference does not: a rise of 10 °C is a rise of 18 °F. Temperature values below absolute zero are rejected. Fuel economy values must be greater than zero because consumption and economy are reciprocals.

How are results rounded?

Automatic display uses up to 12 significant digits. You can instead show up to 2, 4, 6, or 8 decimal places. Very small or large results use scientific notation so they do not appear as zero or overflow the page. Calculations use JavaScript floating-point numbers; changing display precision does not round the input or intermediate calculation.

Can I convert cups to grams, or months to days?

Cups measure volume and grams measure mass, so that conversion requires an ingredient density and is not included. Calendar months and years vary in length and are excluded from fixed-duration conversions. A day here is exactly 24 hours.
